The
newly formed California Floodplain Management Task Force has scheduled
five meetings this year with the first meeting to be held on two
consecutive days this month.
Creation of the Task
Force was one recommendation of Assembly Bill 1147, Statutes of
2000, as well as the 1997 Flood Emergency Action Team report. Its
purpose is to examine specific issues related to State and local
floodplain management, including features that could substantially
reduce flood damages, and to make recommendations for more effective
statewide floodplain management policies.
The Task Force is comprised
of individuals from State and local agencies, nonprofit organizations,
the business community, and other key participants. It is charged
with providing recommendations for revisions to statewide floodplain
management policies by December 31, 2002.
A series of issue papers
will be provided for discussion at the meetings. Those issue papers
will also be available to any interested party at a soon-to-be-developed
website: http://fpmtaskforce.water.ca.gov.
